                               Do 2-bits really matter..?

By now it is a history, but during the 1990’s there was a great fear and apprehension that many vital activities of  computer technology would cause a disaster when calendar flipped from 31^st December 1999 to 1^st January 2000. It was major catastrophe expected and made many sleepless nights to computer analysts. It is only about allocation of two extra bits.

                                   The early designers of computer had chosen to save space in the storage capacity of computers assuming the ‘19’ in all date entries. You would be thinking that the computer analysts are crap and they don’t have a forgo thinking. Before the advancement of IC technology, 1mb storage capacity drive is used to be a size of recent tablet phones we are using. Now-a-days the size are compressed using IC technology and they are stored in the registers and flip-flops. So finally when the year approached 2000, computer would label as 00. Literally it means 1900 for the computer and they thought that it would lead to a havoc.

                              It was assumed that following sort of things would happen: like calculating of someone’s age, credit card expiry date. Suppose a person was born on 31^st December 1970 then it would be assigned in computer as 31/12/70and by December 31^st 2000 his age would be 30. But in the computer it would be as 31/12/00. So his age becomes 00-70=-70 years. They thought that it would cause a havoc in computer system. But it didn’t cause much problem but it caused some trouble.
